VMIXers: Julian Santos III on Five Ways to Inspire Personal Creativity

As resident graphic designer and multimedia developer at VMIX, I need a steady flow of inspiration to drive projects forward. Whether crafting a print layout, creating a new graphic or editing a video, I still encounter creative blocks now and then. Here are some tactics that I use to move beyond and battle those creativity gremlins.

1) Let Fashion Be Your Passion

Being a style fiend and a believer in the saying, “When you look good you feel good,” I use my fashion sense as a way to express my creativity.

It could be something as simple as a graphic t-shirt, a patterned tie or colorful shoes, because what you wear is another way to boost a dull day and make it exciting and fun.

I like creating custom one-of-a-kind clothing like these sneakers I designed using my illustrations. The thrill I get from wearing something fun amps up my day.

2) Make the Rudimentary Your Documentary

I recommend carrying at least one digital camera and a moleskine notebook with you at all times, because you never know when you might come across something worth capturing. Put gratitude in your attitude and you’ll find the mundane things that you encounter are amazing gifts in themselves.

Take a phone photo of that amazing meal you had, keep a bedside notepad to record last night’s dream, make a napkin sketch of that great idea over coffee with friends, or just make a video of your dogs playing. What you capture may nudge you to that next level in your creative pursuits.

3) Be Proactive About Being Active

There’s truth in the cliche that a sound body means a sound mind. You’ll find “aha!” moments arise when your blood is pumping.

Call it a runner’s high or an adrenaline rush but connecting physically with your body usually results in clearing your head, leaving space for sweet creativity to flow.

Exercising is easier when you do it with purpose, so park a bit further from the store, jog with a friend, or skateboard the lots, because you can!

4) Be a Crafter of What Brings Laughter

Draw a laugh-out-loud cartoon, tell a joke, take a webcam photo of yourself and goof it up.

Appreciate the things that make you smile and, most importantly, share your own brand of crazy with others!

Not only will your amusement generate happiness around you but when you feel good, you create good things!

5) Change Your Point of View … Do Something New!

When you introduce something new into your routine, you’ll discover new perspectives and often solutions!

Take a new route to work, try a restaurant you’ve overlooked, read a book on something you’re dealing with to get a new perspective.

Taking a short trip to a new neighborhood or a nearby town can be a mini vacation from your usual environment, and ideas and solutions flourish when you’re in new situations.

Good luck on your creative endeavors. Feel free to share more ideas in the comment section!
