Windows Update affecting NDI stability
There is currently a Windows Security Update that is affecting the stability of NDI sources on computers that have this update installed.
The affected updates are:
Windows 11 - KB5063878
Windows 10 - KB5063709
Symptoms
The result is severe stability issues for all NDI sources on the affected computer. Including very laggy video, low frame rate and a large amount of dropped frames.
The issue only affects UDP NDI sources only. TCP are unaffected.
Check if you have the affected update installed
- Open Settings in Windows
- Select Windows Update
- Select Update History
- Select Uninstall Updates
- Check to see if you have "Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB5063878)" installed
If you don't we recommend delaying installing the update for now until a fix is released. But depending on your update settings it may auto-install at some point in the future.
How to solve
Option 1 (recommended):
You can manually change the NDI Receive mode using the NDI Access Manager app available in the NDI Tools pack to use TCP instead which does not exhibit these same issues.
- Download and install the Free NDI Tools pack: https://ndi.video/tools/
- Once installed launch the NDI Access Manager app
- Select the Advanced tab
- Change the "Receive Mode" to Multi-TCP (Legacy) and press OK
- Repeat for any other computers that have the affected update installed and use NDI sources
(this option is not recommended for Multicast NDI workflows)
Option 2:
Manually uninstall the Windows security update from your Windows Settings.
- Open Settings in Windows
- Select Windows Update
- Select Update History
- Select Uninstall Updates
- Find the update titled "Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB5063878)" and click Uninstall to remove it
This is recommended if you use Multicast.
Otherwise we still recommend Option 1 as Windows may reinstall the update again at a future date.
We will update this Knowledge Base article once Windows releases a stable update to fix this issue.
